Company History
The Superior Fresh story began in 2011, when North Country Clear Waters purchased 120 acres in Northfield, WI, with the intent to restore the land to its native state while developing a sustainable agriculture business. To this end, they founded Freshwater Family Farms and Superior Fresh. Two years later, the NCCW property expanded to 720 acres. In 2012, with wild fishery stocks plummeting and water resources disappearing, Superior Fresh invested over $1,000,000 in R&D, evaluating the viability of a sustainable aquaculture business - primarily land-based recirculating aquaculture systems. By 2013, an aquaponic model was chosen as the most sustainable method, an approach that allows growers to maximize water use efficiency while producing very little waste. After years of design and engineering, we broke ground in June of 2015, kicking off a 2-year-long construction project. We grew our business not only structurally, but also internally, hiring professionals with relevant expertise to build the best team in the business. By 2017, we were raising premium Atlantic salmon in a state-of-the-art land-based recirculating aquaculture facility and growing certified organic produce in an ultramodern hydroponic glass greenhouse. Phase II greenhouse construction was completed in 2019, increasing total production of leafy greens to 3 million pounds per year.
